A Celebration of the Fishing Culture and the Natural World around Laaiplek.
Join us on a three hour photography exploration of the fishing culture and natural world around Laaiplek, while one of our photography coaches are at hand to help you get the best possible photographs.
Photographers of all levels of experience, will love experiencing the decades old relationship between fishermen and the natural world around them.
Laaiplek, on the West Coast of South Africa, is one of South Africa's most important fishing villages.
Large fishing vessels are moored alongside the quays, while fishermen cast their hand nets to catch bait for the big fish. All the while seagulls, seals and herons patiently wait for the scraps that fall their way.
The perfect setting for a beautiful variety of photographic subjects.
An abundance of photo opportunities.
Making use of the morning light, we depart early from the Riviera Hotel in Velddrif and slowly make our way towards the Berg River river mouth at Laaiplek.
As we pass under the bridge we are met with old fishing wrecks and abundant bird life foraging against the river banks.
Large flocks of Cape Cormorant treat the river as their highway, going to the salt pans and back.
As we travel further towards the river mouth fishing vessels lay patiently and wait for their next trip out to sea as a lone fisherman casts his net from one of the jetties.
At the river's mouth a kayaker quietly respects the boundaries of the open water in front of him, while he admires the hundreds of cormorants flying over him as they come in from the open seas.
This trip is all about the contrasting subjects. From sunken wooden ships to industry on the banks of the river. Lone fishermen and solo kayakers. Seals baking in the sun on the jetties and large bird flocks flying or foraging against the beautiful natural backdrop of the river banks.
